When your baby is born, have Dad bring the pet a blanket or shirt with the scent of your new baby. This will prepare your pet for your baby’s homecoming. They get it!
Some dogs act as though they were the parents, nervously checking up on the baby. When Baby cries they worry. Other dogs act as if nothing new has happened, and most cats are pretty laid back, but they know what’s going on.
Give a beloved pet the chance to welcome your baby, but never leave any pet (or a young sibling, for that matter) alone with Baby.
Most of my clients always tell me that their dog is their first born, I have a dog myself and I adore my dog, I could never do away or even entertain the thought of getting rid of my dog or sending it to a relative because of a newborn baby. Everyone adjusts. If you are contemplating having a baby, I would imagine you would get a dog that is child friendly.
I have heard too many stories about cats and it is a known fact that cats are jealous, I wouldn't take any chances with a cat. I suggest always being around the newborn baby when he is around any pets. Better to be safe than sorry!
